Bill Schuck, "when fire turns to rain and rain into ice"

Bill Schuck’s sunken Red Maple tests its improbable planting in a bunker that exposes the extensive root system teeming below the surface. 2009 turned out to be one of the rainiest summers ever, causing this hole to flood, putting the tree at risk. First we tried covering the hole with a tarp when it rained, a kind of raincoat for holes. When that didn't work, we had to set up a pumping system that pumped the water hundreds of feet away from the hole, so as to avoid letting the groundwater flow to fill this natural pool.
