Lee Stoetzel, "VW Bus," 2007
Lee Stoetzel, McMansion 5, 2005
Modeled after Volkswagen’s beloved T2 Kombi Van (1968-1979), Lee’s "VW Bus" immediately evokes family
road trips to escape suburbia
or surprise encounters with
camping hippies performing counter-cultural rituals.
Introduced in 1950, the VW Van became synonymous with the growth of the suburbs, paving the way for the suburban fleet: station wagons, Suburban vans, minivans and eventually SUVs.
His "McMansions," homes built using post-consumer fast-food waste(re-cycled foodstuff such as crumbled burgers, lids, straws, containers, sauce packets, and chicken bits), reiterate the ever-growing appetite for ever-more super-sized dwellings.
