Jordan Bernier, "Untitled," 2011
By opting to photograph each frame, created either by arranging geometric shapes cut from colored paper or using his screenprints as readymades, Jordan’s approach is decidedly one of the most lo-tech to date. Unlike Kentridge and animators who employ puppet-like figures, most of Jordan’s frames and props vanish, since his scenes are only temporarily comprised of parts that eventually return to his cache of shapes that sometimes reappear in later frames.
Such geometric imagery recalls Oskar Fischinger’s early twentieth century stop-motion animated films, while each video’s jerky movements evoke the handmade flair of Sesame Street’s famed clips by nearly 50 animators such as Al Jarnow.
