Duox, "DDuffel (Duplex Deadlift)," 2011
Although Duox typically employ found images, the only thing “found” here is the soundtrack, a slowed-down Beyoncé song that sounds sung by a man. Although this exhibition is rife with sexual innuendos, the religious overtones seem stronger. The room’s somber mood evokes a church alcove. One notices the shadow of the cross, as a fellow, wearing a “Man Hunt” t-shirt, endures self-flagellation with a fuchsia Gerber Daisy (bloody?) bouquet dipped in Gatorade®. Behind a bloody hand-print shower curtain, two masked men wash one another in a ritual cleansing. The white, mesh jersey, decorated with safety pins holding small red beads suggests a self-flagellator’s post-ritual laundry. Most surprising, two ice handbags melt, dripping their contents into a glass aquarium featuring mediated images.
